Types of Vitamin A

There are two types of Vitamin A:

  1. Preformed Vitamin A
  2. Provitamin A

1- Preformed Vitamin A

It comes in the original form of Retinol. Generally it is found in Animal Based Food Products Like Meat, Fish, and Dairy Products.

2- ProVitamin A

It comes in the form of Carotenoid. It is present in plant based food such as fruits and vegetables. 

Symptoms of Vitamin A deficiency

In developed countries like USA and European countries, there are very less cases of Vitamin A deficiency. But In developing countries like India, People don’t have enough access to Vitamin A. So there are many cases of Vitamin A deficiency.

The people at highest risk of vitamin A deficiency are pregnant women, breastfeeding ladies, infants and children. Cystic fibrosis and chronic diarrhoea are also the reason behind Vitamin A deficiency.

2- Xerophthalmia

The person who suffers from deficiency of Vitamin A who have Xerophthalmia, feels dry eyes. It means that a person’s eyes don’t keep moist or produce tears.
